The 11th IWCFTA Demonstrated Novel Academia-Industry-Government Tripartite Collaboration

The International Workshop on Chaos-Fractals Theories and Applications (IWCFTA) celebrated its 11th anniversary in the Chinese city of Chongqing in October 11-13, 2018. This year, IWCFTA introduced an innovative organizational model involving local industrial participation and government support in a view to developing collaborative plans for applying chaos and fractals theories in information and data security as well as other areas of practical importance. For the first time, IWCFTA-2018 was able to link academia, industry and government together and created opportunities for direct dialogues between different parties for future collaborations. Thanks to the fantastic effort of the organizing team, led by Prof. Shukai Duan of Southwest University, China, IWCFTA-2018 put together a two-day program that themed around applications of chaos-fractals theories with emphasis on information security and communications. Apart from its academic partners City University of Hong Kong and Northeastern University, this year's organizer, Southwest University, had also secured significant support from ZTEICT Technology Co. Ltd. and the Chongqing Hechuan Government.

The workshop was honored by the presence of key local government officials, CEO of ZTEICT, as well as President of Southwest University at the Opening Ceremony, where they welcomed the participants and reconfirmed their support for academia-industry-government collaboration in opening up new opportunities in developing application-oriented projects to boost innovation in data and information security as well as other areas of critical importance.

This year, over 300 participants from Hungary, South Africa, Poland, and different parts of China attended 7 keynote lectures and over 100 regular oral presentations. Keynote addresses were delivered by Prof. Géza Kolumbán of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Hungary, Prof. Zbigniew Galias of AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland, Prof. Charalampos Skokos of Cape Town University, South Africa, Prof. Anton Van Wyk of Witwatersrand University, South Africa, Prof. Jinhu Lü of Beihang University, China, Prof. Binghong Wang of the University of Science and Technology, China, and Prof. Shukai Duan from Soutwest University, China, covering topics ranging from basic theory, nonlinear phenomena, numerical simulation methods, to applications in communications, data security, information networks and brain-inspired computing. Participants of this year’s IWCFTA also had the special privilege to see a live demo of chaos-based ultra-wideband signal generation provided by Prof. Géza Kolumbán during the workshop.

The topics of interest of IWCFTA have encompassed all areas in nonlinear systems and cross-disciplinary applications, and have kept expanding in terms of applications. Prompted by the rapid growth of data and complexity of information processing, IWCFTA will continue to extend its coverage and explore new applications in networked systems, data systems and complex engineering systems.

The next IWCFTA will be organized by Southeast University in Nanjing, China. Stay tuned for further updates!
