IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award 2026

The 2026 IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award, a technical field award of the IEEE, was awarded to Professor David Allstot for his "contributions to CMOS mixed-signal-RF ICs and mentoring generations of circuits and systems designers.” Through his groundbreaking innovations in telephony, mobile communications, and mixed-signal SoC design, Professor Allstot has advanced global connectivity and helped enable the modern communications era. The PCM filter he developed for National Semiconductor transformed telephony economics and established CMOS as the standard IC technology for mixed-signal/ RF systems. His pioneering RF SCPA architecture revolutionized mobile power efficiency—technology now embedded in billions of devices worldwide. Equally impactful is his legacy as an educator and mentor. He has guided more than twenty future professors and numerous industry leaders, multiplying his influence across universities, research labs, and companies worldwide. His unique ability to translate theory into practice has shaped generations of innovators whose work continues to benefit society. An IEEE Life Fellow, Professor Allstot is Distinguished Special Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
