IEEE CASS Outreach Initiative 2012 (Guidelines and Call for Proposals)
1. Brief Description
IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) has established an “Outreach Fund” for its members.
This fund is intended to provide financial resources for projects that will benefit CASS and the circuits and systems community in general. All activities have to be carried out between 1st January and 31st December 2012.
Examples of projects that can be supported include (not an exhaustive list):
1.Outreach activities for pre-university students and teachers
2.Promotional materials for CASS or the field
3.Workshops and Tutorial Schools on areas related to CASS field of interest
4.CASS membership drives
Funding for the Outreach Fund will be allocated on a year-to-year basis and the budget for each year will depend on the Society’s finances and member interest in this program.
The Outreach Fund is managed by a committee of 5 members including the Administrative Vice President who will act as Chair for this Call.
2. Application Guidelines
CASS members, Chapters or Committees who are interested in proposing projects can contact the chair of the Outreach Initiative Committee directly for guidance. The chair and other committee members will help proposers develop a project proposal that will then be reviewed by the committee. Two deadlines for submission of proposals will be available to all CASS members, one in November 2011 and the other, if funds remain after the first call, in May 2012. The review and decision process will then take place and awarded projects will be authorized starting from the beginning of 2012 and from mid-2012 (respectively). Interested members should contact the chair as soon as possible so that sufficient time is available to address any issues identified and to develop an effective proposal.
The inaugural Outreach Fund project selections are expected to be announced in early January, 2012.
Deadlines for the 2012 Outreach Fund Initiative:
- Friday 11th November 2011
for projects to take place between 1st January and 31st December 2012
- Friday 11th May 2012
Note: This call will be issued only if there are remaining funds to support further projects after the first call closing in November 2011
To apply for funds, please fill in the online application form by one of the deadlines indicated above. You will need to include:
1.Name and contact details of the proposer (individual member, Chapter or Committee)
2.Brief description of the proposal (max. 500 words)
3.Description of how the planned activity will benefit the Society (max. 500 words)
4.Metrics to measure its success (max. 250 words)
5.Detailed financial support requested from CAS (please specify if other organizations are also providing additional funding and how much)
Please note that a final report will be required from all funded activities and events. The report should include the experience, successes, impact of the activity and budget acquittal. The report should be submitted within 2 weeks from the end of the activity/event
to the Chair of the Outreach Committee.
3. Additional Information and 2012 Budget
The Outreach Fund can be used to support students, material expenditures (including subcontracts), travel and scientific events. It cannot be used to support administrative or support staff, to buy durable equipment or be used for salaries of working professionals in
the field, including faculty and researchers in industry. Also, the Fund cannot directly support any for-profit activity. Proposals to fund scientific research will not be considered.
In some cases contracts may need to be executed with IEEE before projects can be initiated. IEEE guidelines and requirements for contracts must be satisfied in these cases. The Outreach Initiative committee will work with proposers to facilitate and expedite this
process.
For 2012, CASS has allocated $70,000 for the Outreach Fund. We hope to fund 5-10 projects in 2012. Note that the funds allocated must be spent within the calendar year, i.e. by 31st December 2012.
5. Contact information
