COMPETITIONS, CALL FOR PAPERS & INVITATIONS
International Competition on Genetically Engineered Machines — Engineering Biological Circuits and Systems: iGEM at MIT
Every year iGEM, the International Competition on Genetically Engineered Machines, takes place in November at MIT. iGEM sees the participation of teams of faculty and students from some of the top world universities and research institution is held in November at MIT in Boston. Each team comprises both engineers and biologists competing to propose the best genetically engineered biological circuits or machine using a set of standardized parts, or bio-bricks, made available to all participating teams. (For more information and a list of this year competing teams see http://2008.igem.org.)
iGEM is a fantastic opportunity for all CAS members interested in systems and synthetic biology to attract good students, form a team and work on exciting projects. There are a lot of opportunities for our community to give an important contribution to the new challenging research area of synthetic biology.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue on “Circuits and systems Solutions for Nanoscale CMOS Design Challenges”, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs
This special issue intends to present cutting-edge circuits and systems solutions that address nanoscale CMOS design challenges, including leakage, variability, low inherent device gains and low supply voltages. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Low-voltage low-power circuit techniques
- Operating principles and design techniques to overcome nanoscale CMOS challenges for basic functional building blocks
- Co-design and optimal use of analog and digital signal processing
- Co-design and optimal use of continuous-time and discrete-time signal processing
- Alternative signal representation methods enabling efficient nanoscale circuit function
Manuscript submission is due on Oct 29 2008 and the issue is scheduled for publication in May 2009.

Guest Editors: Peter Kinget, Columbia University; K.P. Pun, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Lucien Breems, NXP Semiconductors
CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue on Biometric Instrumentation and Measurement, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement
Biometrics is a growing and important applications area receiving significant interest as a result of the criticality and the social impact of its applications. In addition, the increasing worldwide interest in security makes biometrics even more valuable and desirable, from many perspectives including its theory, technologies, design methodologies, and applications. The constituencies that may benefit from this ever growing field include academia, industry, government, and the general public. To create a biometric system various issues need to be studied in a comprehensive and integrated way: from sensing to measurement procedures, from signal analysis and interpretation to quality assessment, from feature extraction to classification and analysis, from knowledge creation to extraction, and much more. Integration and cooperative combination are other key aspects of biometrics applications. This special issue is focused on publishing original papers that address instrumentation and measurement aspects of the design, implementation and applications of biometrics. The detailed call for papers is available at
http://www.dti.unimi.it/~piuri/pages/TIM-SpecialIssueBiometricIMCFP.pdf
The submission period is February 15 - March 1, 2009. Notification of final acceptance is expected by June 30, 2009 and publication in December 2009.
Guest Editors: Fabio Scotti, University of Milan, Italy; David Zhang, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong; Evangelia Micheli-Tzanakou, Rutgers University, USA
Questions about the special issue should be directed to Dr. Fabio Scotti (fabio.scotti@unimi.it).

CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue on Biometrics Systems, IEEE Systems Journal
The increasing needs for security as well as medical diagnosis make biometrics more and more valuable world-wide, both as theory, technologies, design methodologies, and applications are concerned. To create a biometric system various issues need to be studied in an integrated way: from sensing to measurement procedures, from signal analysis and interpretation to quality assessment, from feature extraction to classification and analysis, from knowledge creation to extraction, from algorithms to data structure, from computational complexity to system performance, from system engineering to software engineering, from privacyto social implications, and much more. Integration and cooperative combination are another key aspects if biometrics systems and applications.
This special issue is directed to collect original papers that address any aspect of the design, implementation and application of biometrics systems, by focusing on a system-level perspective. The detailed call for papers is available at http://www.dti.unimi.it/~piuri/pages/ISJ-SpecialIssueBiometricsSystemsCFP.pdf. The submission deadline is January 15, 2009. Acceptance notification is expected by April 15, 2009 and publication in August 2009.
Guest Editors: Vincenzo Piuri, University of Milan, Italy; Jie Tian, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China; and Evangelia Micheli-Tzanakou, Rutgers University, USA.
